Phajoding Monastery: Maitreya Bodhisattva
BHUTAN, Thimphu; 17th century; Gilt copper alloy; H: 19 cm
Seated with legs in the pendant position, Maitreya makes the Dharmacakra (Dharma wheel) mudra while holding lotus stems that wrap around the forearms. Supporting a stupa and a vase, the flowers bloom at shoulder level. The Bodhisattva wears a five-leafed crown that is inlaid, like the rest of his body ornaments, with turquoise. Pegs on the feet suggest they were originally resting on lotus pedestals or a footstool. |
