Sakyamuni Buddha
CHINA; Northern Wei dynasty (386–534); Gilt bronze; H: 15.9 cm; Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art, Kansas City, Missouri, USA
The Buddha is seated in full lotus position on a flat cushion that may have been the top of a throne stand. The figure's robes are arranged to leave the right shoulder bare but a fold is brought around to cover the back. The Buddha's right hand is raised in abhaya (fearlessness) mudra and shows webbing between the fingers, one of the Buddha's Thirty-Two Marks of Excellence. The other hand secures the fold of the monastic robe about the left arm. The hair is plaited and arranged with a whorl at the front. |
