Mogao Cave 17: Standing Buddha

CHINA, Gansu, Dunhuang; Tang dynasty (618–907); Ink and color on silk; 48 x 16.2 cm; Guimet Museum of Asian Art, Paris, France
This painting from the early 9th century was discovered in Mogao Cave 17. The Buddha stands on a lotus pedestal depicted with bold red lines. The right hand displays the vitarka (teaching) mudra and the left is held in front of the abdomen. A red monastic robe with green trim covers the body. The folds are outlined in black and highlighted with lighter tones. The black hem of what appears to be an inner robe rests on the figure's feet. The bottom border is decorated with floral patterns.
