Standing Bodhisattva
NEPAL; 11th century; Gilt copper alloy; H: 43.2 cm; Norton Simon Museum, Pasadena, California, USA
The kingly Bodhisattva stands on a double lotus pedestal. The advancing left foot throws the body 's weight to the right and displaces the waist to the left. The head remains upright beneath an elaborate three-leaf crown. A double-stranded necklace hangs below the neck with three lines, and a similar jeweled belt with a flower ornament secures the buoyant skirt. A sacred thread passes over the bared torso and a knotted sash crosses from hip to thigh in the opposite direction. A hollow oval nimbus surrounded with flames is about the head. The figure holds a lotus in the left hand while the right hand holds either a fruit or a gem. |
