Taiyin Temple South Hall: Reclining Buddha

This 4 m long and 1.5 m high, Buddha statue is located within a wooden niche three bays wide. The Buddha 's head rests upon his right hand while his left arm extends along the body. The head is turned to look serenely upward with a fixed gaze. The monastic robe covers both shoulders and its raised folds descend in a regular pattern to the feet placed side by side. The background is a later addition painted in 1372 during the Ming dynasty. The painting depicts male and female devotees in Chinese dress. The top of the niche is crowned, and a lotus and lotus petal patterns are drawn along its base. |
