Palgongsan: Medicine Buddha

SOUTH KOREA, Daegu; Unified Silla dynasty (668–935)
This rock carving dates from late Silla dynasty (57 BCE-935 CE) and is carved on Palgongsan. It was listed as Provincial Tangible Cultural Property No. 3.
The Medicine Buddha, 10 m in height, sits meditating in full lotus position on a lotus throne uniquely carved with decorative dragon heads. The right palm of the Buddha faces outward and the left hand cups a medicine jar. The monastic robe leaves the right shoulder bare. The folds are simple and rhythmically portrayed. The lotus flower nimbus is rimmed by a vine-like pattern and intersects with a similar aureole below, both of them enclosed in a flame-patterned mandorla.
