Longxing Temple: Seated Buddha

CHINA, Shandong, Qingzhou; Northern Qi dynasty (550–577); Limestone; H: 64 cm; Qingzhou Museum, Shandong, China
The statue depicts a seated Buddha with his skin gilded and accessories painted. The figure sits with both legs pendent and both arms missing from the elbow downward. The monastic robe leaves most of the right shoulder bare and is so sheer that the outlines of the limbs show through. Raised folds cross the upper body diagonally and then ripple down over the legs. A swastika symbol is visible on the chest, beneath which the twined material of the belt securing the lower robe is clearly defined. The features of the serene face are also distinct below tight curls and a barely indicated usnisa.
