This relief is located on the inner wall of the first square terrace at Borobudur and depicts Prince Siddhartha's renunciation. The prince stands in the center in the process of cutting his hair. There is an attendant on either side with one holding a receptacle for the hair, while the other, probably his charioteer, holds hair ornaments, and a scepter. Four observers are located on the right all with their palms joined, one is kneeling, and the rest are standing. Kanthaka, the prince's horse, stands on the right. Two heavenly beings are in the air above the prince. The attire of the figures is evidently Javanese despite being influenced by sculpture from the Gupta period (circa 320-550). |
