Seated Buddha
NEPAL; 12th century; Gilt copper alloy; H: 48 cm; Patan Museum, Nepal
The Buddha sits in full lotus position with hands in bhumisparsa (earth-touching) mudra. A jewel decorates the flattened usnisa and the urna sits low on the forehead above the joined arcs of the eyebrows. The elongated earlobes have a distinctive curve. Another sign of the Buddha's status is the three lines on the neck. The monastic robe leaves the right shoulder bare and has a decorated border along the hem. The only indications of folds are the ruffles that fold over the left shoulder and the fan of loose material under the crossed ankles. |
