Dunkar Cave 1: Walking Buddha
CHINA, Tibet, Ngari; Guge Kingdom (circa 10th-17th century), circa 11th century
This mural, located on the north wall of Cave 1, portrays a Buddha encompassed by a white mandorla. The Buddha stands with one foot raised, appearing to walk forwards. He wears an ocher monastic robe and has a white nimbus with an orange border. The left hand holds an alms bowl, while the right grasps a monk’s staff that rests upon the shoulder. The large, dark-colored motif above the Buddha is believed to be a representation of a Bodhi tree. |
