Tumxuk: Seated Buddha
CHINA, Xinjiang, Tumxuk; 5th–6th century; Wood; H: 16.5 cm; Museum of Asian Art, Berlin, Germany
This artwork from Tumxuk shows a Buddha seated in full lotus position with head lowered and hands in dhyana (meditation) mudra. A monastic robe covers both shoulders and clings to the body. Cap-like hair builds to a rounded usnisa. The head of this sculpture appears smaller, and the face and hands are more realistically portrayed in comparison with similar sculptures from the same period. |
