SOUTH KOREA, South Chungcheong,Cheongyang; Goryeo dynasty (918–1392), dated 1346; Gilt copper alloy; H: 85.5 cm
The style of the statue is typical of the Goryeo dynasty (918–1392) although the throne and mandorla are missing. The Buddha is dressed in monastic robes and sits in full lotus position with right hand raised in the lotus mudra while holding his usual attribute of a medicine pot in the other hand. A few artifacts were discovered inside the statue in 1955 such as a silver box, a white bronze mirror, a red silk prayer scroll, several scriptures, and various pieces of fabric. Among the preserved items was an inscription dated from 1346. The statue was listed as Treasure No. 337 in 1963. |
