This painting illustrates the meeting of Li Ao, magistrate of Langzhou, and Master Yaoshan Weiyan. There is a postscript in the upper left corner written by Yanxi Huangwen, the abbot of Lingyin Monastery in Hangzhou during the rule of Emperor Lizong (reigned 1244-1264).
Yaoshan is seated on a stone beneath a tree. A sutra chest and a vase rest on a rock beside him. Li, dressed in official's robes, stands on the left, joining his palms and bowing. With sparing ink strokes, the painting manages to convey the essence of the Chan story. |
