Reliquary Stupa
THAILAND; circa 16th century; Crystal and gold; H: 16.5 cm; Norton Simon Museum, Pasadena, California, USA
This work of art from the Ayutthaya Kingdom (circa 1350-1767) has a circular structure similar to a stupa. The base is made of crystal. The lowest tier is quite broad and tapers significantly, while the lower tiers of the gold section are plain, and the upper tiers have a lotus design. All of the gold tiers are separated by string beads. At the top, there is a narrow pointed dome terminating in a lotus bud, followed by a conical canopy adorned with geometric motifs. Six thin pendants shaped like Bodhi leaves hang from the bottom of the canopy. |
