Baima Temple Great Hero Hall: Vaisravana
CHINA, Henan, Luoyang; Yuan dynasty (1271–1368); Dry lacquer; H: 200 cm
Vaisravana is the leader of the Heavenly Kings and guardian of the north. He is richly armored and holds a small pagoda in his left hand and a spear in his right hand. Ribbons flutter from his crown and floating stoles wind down the length of his body. Complex ornaments descend from the nose ring of the lion at the base of the breastplate and are also depicted in motion. Although the figure faces forward, the movement of the clothes and accessories offsets the statue's static position. |
