Bao Chengxun (1625-1695)
CHINA, Anhui, Xuancheng; Ming to Qing dynasty (1368–1911)
Bao Chengxun was a woodblock carver from Jingde county in Xuancheng, although he worked mostly in Suzhou, Jiangsu. Bao, along with Zhu Gui and other notable artists, created the Suzhou-style woodblock carving, which remained popular throughout the rule of Emperor Kangxi (reigned 1661-1722) of the Qing dynasty.
Bao's picture books, New Edition of Various Dramas and Words of Advice from Huaisong Hall are kept at the Shanghai Library, which also retains his printmaking illustrations for Legends of Yangzhou Dream. Other works include the Frontispiece of the Thousand Buddhas of the Past Kalpa Sutra as well as printmaking illustrations for Legends of Qinglou Moon, which are retained at the National Library of China in Beijing. |
