Xilingol: Manjusri Bodhisattva

CHINA, Inner Mongolia, Xilingol; Qing dynasty (1644–1911); Gilt copper alloy; H: 180.3 cm; Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology, Stockholm, Sweden
This 18th century Manjusri was found amidst the monastery ruins near Dolon Nor in Xilingol during the 1930s. The figure wears a five-leaf crown that is studded with semi-precious stones. Buoyant ribbons fly from the sides and a stole winds from the shoulders over the arms. The Bodhisattva sits in a full lotus position on a double lotus throne that is often seen in Mongolian statues. Manjusri brandishes the sword of wisdom in the right hand, while the left hand holds the long stalk of an intricately formed flower on which a sutra is supported. The body, limbs, and accoutrements were all created separately and then assembled.
