Mogao Cave 57: Bodhisattva in Contemplation

CHINA, Gansu, Dunhuang; Tang dynasty (618–907)
This image from the Early Tang period (618–712) is situated on the left beside the inner niche in the back (west) wall of the main chamber. The Bodhisattva wears a necklace, long flowing robes, and an ornate headdress decorated with ribbons that trail down on both sides. Seated on a lotus throne, the figure gazes downward, resting the left elbow on the raised left knee. The graceful posture and contemplative expression of the Bodhisattva make for an elegant image.
