Mogao Cave 435: Ceiling
CHINA, Gansu, Dunhuang; Northern Wei dynasty (386–534)
The rear ceiling of this cave is flat, and painted with a colorful diamond-in-square motif. A large round lotus is in the center, with two white geese in two corners of the enclosing square. Trefoil and other floral designs are painted on the borders, while the four corners of the outer square contain four apsaras. The apsaras are bare-chested, and wear colorful lower garments along with long stoles around their arms that trail behind them. The colors used include white, blue, black, red, and green. The style is simple yet rich in variety and content. |
