Bodhidharma

CHINA; Ming dynasty (1368–1644); Porcelain; H: 29.8 cm; Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA
Bodhidharma sits in meditation with downcast eyes. He is depicted with a round face and high forehead. The eyebrows and mustache consist of whorl patterns, which are also rendered around the ears. Bodhidharma has a bulbous nose, narrow mouth, and elongated earlobes. The body is covered in a loose flowing robe leaving the chest bare. The hands and feet are hidden within the robe. The porcelain has a shiny white ivory luster typical on works from Dehua. This example is from Dehua and was created in the 17th century.
