Seonunsa Temple Dosoram Hermitage: Seated Buddha

SOUTH KOREA, North Joella, Gochang; Goryeo dynasty (918–1392); Stone; H: 17 m
Located in Dosoram (Tusita) Hermitage, this carving of a Buddha inclines to the right, and sits in full lotus position on a stepped throne, holding what looks like a scripture in both hands. This figure is sometimes identified as Maitreya. The figure came under the spotlight when secret records relevant to the Eastern Learning (Donghak) Movement in 1860 and the associated peasant revolt in 1894 were discovered in a chest cavity, making it one of the most high-profile large figures from the Goryeo dynasty (918-1392). It was listed as Treasure No. 1200 in 1994.
