Biyun Temple Arhat Hall: Five Hundred Arhats

CHINA, Beijing; Qing dynasty (1644–1911); Wood
There is a total of 508 Arhat statues housed within the Arhat Hall, which was built in 1748 during the Qing dynasty. The statues are made of wood and gilded. Each figure is life-size and all of them are in slightly different sitting postures. Each statue is individualized with different facial features and expressions, some performing hand gestures and other holding instruments. A name plaque is placed before each figure.
