Statuette of Ascetic Sakyamuni

CHINA; Dated 1981; By Liao Hongbiao; Stoneware; H: 55 cm; Foshan New Shiwan Artistic Ceramic Company, Guangdong, China
This statuette of Ascetic Sakyamuni portrays him with a thin face, long earlobes, a beard, and an emaciated body. He appears to be walking slowly and carefully. Sakyamuni's eyes are downcast, yet he has a tranquil expression, with a slight smile. A yellow robe is draped over his left shoulder and is tied at the waist, flowing down to his feet. His left hand is raised in the abhaya (fearlessness) mudra, and his right arm is held down by his side. A contrast of dark and light brown colors were used to differentiate between the body and the robe. The folds of the robe portray a dynamism which is absent in the weak body.
