Samyangdong: Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva

SOUTH KOREA, Seoul; Three Kingdoms Period (57 BCE–668 CE); Gilt bronze; H: 20.3 cm; National Museum of Korea, Seoul, South Korea
This statue dates to an earlier period of Buddhism in Korea and was listed as National Treasure No. 127 in 1968.
The slender figure wears ornaments, including a three-leaf crown and a plain necklace, that are simplistic when compared with the richer Chinese ornamentation. The right hand holds a vase, while the left hand was most likely holding an object that is now missing. The Bodhisattva stands on an inverted lotus pedestal. The robe leaves the right shoulder bare and flares outward at the bottom. A stole drapes over the figure's arm.
