Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva

CHINA; Sui dynasty (581–618), dated 594; Stone; H: 115 cm; Shanghai Museum, China
The Bodhisattva stands on a lotus pedestal and holds a vase in the left hand. A high headdress with numerous ribbons and intricate jewelry is worn on the head. The abdomen protrudes slightly to present an elegant undulation when seen in profile. The costume is typical of the Sui dynasty.
A double-tier base is beneath the pedestal. The tier above is octagonal and includes two kneeling figures in a square niche. The lowest tier has a weathered inscription stating the statue was dedicated in 594 on behalf of a dead son.
