Jingdezhen: Statuette of Bodhidharma
CHINA, Jiangxi, Jingdezhen; Dated 1990; By Liu Yuanchang; Stoneware; H: 35.5 cm; Jingdezhen Sculpture Ceramics Factory, Jiangxi, China
This Jingdezhen statuette features Bodhidharma with a square head, high forehead, curly eyebrows, large eyes looking downwards, a bulbous nose, lips lightly pursed, and a full, curly beard. He wears a heavy cloak with a hood and sits cross-legged on a stone platform. His face is gold in color, while the cloak is a combination of black and gold.
In order to achieve an aged look, the statuette is partially acid-treated after firing. This effect is particularly noticeable in the cloak. The only detail in this piece lies in Bodhidharma's face, which completely draws the observer's attention. |
