Heavenly King
CHINA; Northern Song dynasty (960–1127); Stone; H: 190 cm; Shanghai Museum, China
The figure wears a lavish headdress decorated with floral and animal motifs. The broad face is set in a furious expression with knitted eyebrows and glaring eyes, creased nose and a downturned mouth. The Heavenly King holds a mace across his stocky body and has a knotted cape draped over his shoulders and knotted at the neck. A full set of armor is worn by this Dharma protector, as he stands astride a pair of yaksas that writhe beneath his booted feet. |
