Zenrinji Temple: Gong

JAPAN, Kyoto; Heian period (794–1185), 12th century; Gilt bronze; H: 10.3 cm
This ritual gong was created in the 12th century and was listed as a National Treasure in 1953. Its elegant curve is enhanced by the series of fine curves on the top and bottom. Surrounded by a ring of lotus petals, the raised boss in the center is quite small and contains a lotus seed design. The remainder of the gong is decorated with ornate lotuses and scroll leaf patterns with a frame at the edge. The design on the back is similar to that on the front.
This gong is a fine example of the maturity of Japanese metalwork in the late Heian period (794-1185), exhibiting a high level of craftsmanship.
