Mogao Cave 196: Samantabhadra Bodhisattva and Attendants
CHINA, Gansu, Dunhuang; Tang dynasty (618–907)
This mural is located to the left of the entrance on the front (east) wall of the main chamber. In the center of the mural is Samantabhadra Bodhisattva, seated cross-legged on a lotus throne atop a six-tusked white elephant. The Bodhisattva has a round face and wears jewelry, long robes, and a stole. A mahout stands beside the elephant, while Bodhisattvas and heavenly beings follow behind. Eighteen panels of figures arranged in compact, orderly rows surround the central image. Together, they form an impressive congregation. |
