Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva

CHINA; Sui dynasty (581–618); Stone; H: 270 cm; Xi'an Beilin Museum, Shaanxi, China
The Bodhisattva stands on a lotus pedestal and holds a vase in the left hand while the right hand is raised but broken. The hair is swept back to pile behind an ornate headdress. Elaborate pieces of jewelry hang down the body. The most intricate piece falls from the neck to meet at a medallion at the waist and loops over to the skirt below. The collar of the upper garment hangs low while a stole drapes down the length of the body. Another stole follows the long necklace to cross at the abdomen. The folds of the lower garment and trailing stole are carefully detailed. There is an obvious crack along the statue's neck.
