Byakugoji Temple: Yama
JAPAN, Nara; Kamakura period (1185–1333), dated 1259; By Koen; Cypress wood; H: 118.7 cm
Assembled from several pieces of cypress wood, this sculpture was one of a set made by Koen in the year 1259. It is listed as an Important Cultural Property.
Yama, a judge of the dead, is depicted sitting cross-legged and wearing an official's hat that is held in place by a horizontal pin. He holds a shaku in the right hand. The robes are exaggeratedly wide with the folds of the sleeves gathered around the knees. The eyes are embedded with jade and add to the intensity of this figure's ferocious face. |
