Robe of Phagpa
CHINA; 13th century; Fabric; Tibet Museum, Lhasa, Tibet, China
Phagpa was the Fifth Patriarch of the Sakya school of Tibetan Buddhism. He was also known as the spiritual adviser and teacher of Kublai Khan (reigned 1260-1294) during the Yuan dynasty.
Phagpa's monastic robe is dark red and is divided into sections by golden strips of cloth with various decorations on them. It is not clear whether this robe was only worn by Phagpa on special occasions, or whether it was for everyday use. Whatever its purpose may have been, it is a well-preserved artifact belonging to an important figure in the history of Tibetan Buddhism. |
