Yarhu: Hariti
CHINA, Xinjiang, Turpan; 9th century; Ink and color on linen; 51 x 37 cm; Museum of Asian Art, Berlin, Germany
Discovered at the ancient city of Yarhu, this is a depiction of the child-protecting deity Hariti holding a baby. Wearing a red headscarf and an orange robe decorated with diamond patterns, she sits on a bench, turned slightly to one side. A nimbus with green, red, and yellow rings surrounds her head. Eight children sketched in ink stand in various poses around the central figure. Some carry objects such as musical instruments or a basket of fruit. Although the upper right corner of the picture is missing and the colors have faded, this is still one of the best preserved paintings of Hariti found in Central Asia. |
