Mogao Cave 427: Attendant Bodhisattvas
CHINA, Gansu, Dunhuang; Sui dynasty (581–618)
Similar attendant Bodhisattvas flank the niches on the north, south, and west sides of the central pillar. The figures remain vivid despite changes to the colors over time. The Bodhisattvas are well-proportioned and their celestial garments, tribhanga poses, and other features show strong character. Such images are rarely seen during the Northern Zhou (557-581) and early Sui (581-618) dynasties. |
