Ajanta Cave 10: Ceiling

INDIA, Maharashtra, Aurangabad; circa mid-to-late 5th century
These images are on the arched ceiling of the caitya cave. The panels in the middle section contain lotus flowers, while the ones on the slopes consist of seated Buddhas, many with attendant Bodhisattvas. The wash technique applied to the lotus flowers renders a dark to light color transformation, creating a three-dimensional effect.
The resplendent Buddhas are dressed either in yellow or red monastic robes. Double-banded oval nimbuses encircle their heads, the inner bands in green or white and the outer bands in gold. Aureoles filled with a variety of patterns surround the Buddhas. The attendant Bodhisattvas wear headdresses and also have oval nimbuses. The blend of color within the images produces a bright and warm result.
