Jingdezhen: Statuette of Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva

CHINA, Jiangxi, Jingdezhen; Dated 1982; By Liu Yuanchang; Porcelain; H: 52 cm; Jingdezhen Sculpture Ceramics Factory, Jiangxi, China
Avalokitesvara is depicted with a slim physique standing on a lotus pedestal. The Bodhisattva has a high topknot surrounded by a large, intricately decorated crown, and the head tilts slightly downward with a serene facial expression showing compassion. A necklace made of beads and jewels adorns the neck and the figure also wears bracelets and a robe that covers both shoulders. The lower part of the body has a light inner robe together with a heavier outer robe. Avalokitesvara holds a whisk in the right hand, while the left rests on the right forearm.
This celadon statuette was made in Jingdezhen and is a classical portrait of Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva, showing great beauty, elegance, and tenderness. The crown, necklace, bracelets, and robes are depicted in meticulous detail.
