Ajina Tepe: Figures Making Offerings
TAJIKISTAN, Khatlon; circa late 7th-early 8th century; 70 x 50 cm; State Hermitage Museum, St. Petersburg, Russia
This fragment was originally part of a mural in a corridor of the temple at Ajina Tepe. It is painted with two figures kneeling on the ground holding up offerings. They wear matching high-necked, wide-sleeved white shirts with the neck bunched up into three horizontal folds. Such clothing was worn by the Turkish nobles of Amu Darya. Both wear a golden belt around their waists, with a dagger on the right side and a sword on the left. The figure on the left side of the picture offers flowers in a wide-mouthed silver cup, while the figure on the right supports a gold plate covered with more flowers. At the top of the fragment, there is a black band decorated with white pearls. |
