Mogao Cave 3: Apsaras

CHINA, Gansu, Dunhuang; Yuan dynasty (1271–1368)
Apsaras fly amidst swirling clouds in the upper corners of the Thousand-Armed, Thousand-Eyed Avalokitesvara murals on the north and south walls of Cave 3. The apsara in the upper right corner of the south wall has a long flowing stole and lower garment. The figure holds a plate with a lotus offering and kneels on a blanket of swirling clouds. The apsara in the upper left corner of the north wall flies through the clouds. The hair is tied in two bunches and a stole is draped around the arms. The stole and lower garment trail behind the figure, who holds a long-stemmed lotus in the left hand, and a single lotus flower in the upraised palm of the right hand.
