Kizil Cave 69: Life of the Buddha - First Turning of the Dharma Wheel
CHINA, Xinjiang, Aksu; circa 7th century
This mural on the semicircular wall above entrance of the main chamber is the largest and most complete illustration of the First Turning of the Dharma Wheel within the Kizil Caves. The Buddha, seated in full lotus position, is located in the center of the mural. A robe crosses the left shoulder with the corner draped over the right shoulder. The Buddha has a round nimbus and a large aureole. A Dharma wheel, a triratna, and two deer can be seen before him. Eight Bodhisattvas and seven disciples flank the Buddha, either sitting or kneeling. To the lower right are two donors, one male and one female. The man wears a crown and a long robe, and his nimbus is adorned with a line of Kuchean calligraphy. The woman wears a golden crown and a dress. The two offering figures are likely Kuchean nobles. |
