Avalokitesvara with a Fish Basket
CHINA; Ming dynasty (1368-1644), dated 1601-1603; By Wu Bin; Ink and color on silk; 187.8 x 85 cm; National Palace Museum, Taipei, Taiwan
The bottom right corner of this painting carries the inscription and seal imprint of the artist, Wu Bin. A devout Buddhist, Wu was known for his precise, original painting style. Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva, who occupies the greater part of this painting, has long plaited hair, carries a scroll, and wears straw sandals. The slender face with a prominent nose has a serene expression. A smaller figure carrying a fish basket is painted on the right, emphasizing the height of the Bodhisattva. The robes of both figures are uniquely depicted with solid lines of a uniform thickness. |
