Yungang Grotto 13: Apsaras

Located on the east and west sides of the grotto ceiling, these apsaras are depicted in elegant dancing postures. They have lean faces, slim figures, and their hair is tied in topknots. They wear short-sleeved shirts, long lower garments belted at the waist, and long, flowing stoles. The figure on the west side has one hand resting on the hip and the other hand raised upward, while the figure on the east side has both hands raised. These apsaras are carved in bas-relief, with distinct outlines and attention to detail. The style of the carvings is characteristic of late Northern Wei dynasty (386–534). |
