Zengsa Caves

CHINA, Tibet, Ngari
These caves are located near the Sutlej River in Zanda, Ngari. They date from the 11th to 13th century, and are accompanied by Buddhist temples, and stupas containing relics. The caves are divided into two groups; the first rests on the fluvial terraces, surrounded by a stupa forest, while the second group is located on the south hill. More than 100 caves remain in the area. All of these were used for meditation, with the exception of Cave 1, which contains numerous murals and was used for worship.
