Mogao Cave 55: Illustration of the Lotus Sutra - Universal Gateway Chapter - Rescuing Merchants from Raksasas at Sea

CHINA, Gansu, Dunhuang; Song dynasty (960–1279)
Located on the south wall, this illustration is based on descriptions of Avalokitesvara rescuing people from danger in the “Universal Gateway Chapter” of the Lotus Sutra.
In the upper register is a pier that extends into the sea, part of a ceremony in honor of Avalokitesvara of the South Sea. A crescent-shaped ship with a thatched cabin is depicted in the middle register. It is surrounded by fierce-looking makaras with open jaws who rise from the mineral green water. Lotuses and wish-fulfilling jewels can be seen floating on the surface of the sea. The merchants on board the ship join palms, while rowers at the stern and bow heave on their oars. On the shore in the lower register, raksasas leap about and wave their arms.
