Hongfo Pagoda: Dharma Protector
CHINA, Ningxia, Yinchuan; Western Xia period (1032-1227); Ink and color on silk; 121 x 61.5 cm; Western Xia Museum, Yinchuan, Ningxia, China
This painting was found in the Hongfo Pagoda Heavenly Palace in 1990. The Dharma protector sits in royal ease posture on a lotus throne supported by a jeweled Sumeru platform. Small pieces of the image have torn away around the head of the Dharma protector, but the round face and one staring eye can still be discerned. The Dharma protector wears a beaded headdress and a red dhoti, and is adorned with a necklace, armlets, and bracelets. A mongoose is held in the right hand. The mandorla is decorated with a pattern of rectangles in alternating colors. |
