Wutaishan Foguang Temple East Hall: Amitabha Buddha Assembly

CHINA, Shanxi, Xinzhou; Tang dynasty (618–907); 69 x 210 cm
This mural is painted on the outer side of a board onto which bracket sets adhere in the northern side bay of the East Hall at Foguang Temple. It depicts Amitabha Buddha sitting on a lotus throne and giving a Dharma teaching. Flanking the Buddha are five attendant Bodhisattvas and two smaller Bodhisattvas making offerings. On the sides of the mural, Avalokitesvara and Mahasthamaprapta Bodhisattvas are shown sitting on lotus thrones, accompanied by Bodhisattvas and heavenly beings. Small apsaras and Buddhas are shown sitting on clouds above the groups of figures. The mural resembles a long scroll laid out to align with the shape of the board. Although the images are weathered and worn, the colors remain partially visible.
