Bezeklik Cave 20: Heavenly King
CHINA, Xinjiang, Turpan; circa 9th-10th century; 1.5 x 1 m; Museum of Asian Art, Berlin, Germany
This image is part of a larger mural on the north wall of the main chamber that features Vaisravana, Heavenly King of the North, and his family. Other Heavenly Kings are depicted on both sides of Vaisravana. The Heavenly King pictured here is located on his right. This King is clad in armor and stands on a mountain peak with a green, flaming nimbus surrounding his head. The king holds a jewel in his right hand while his left hand rests on his waist. A heavenly being on the bottom left kneels in front of this Heavenly King, holding a tray containing three flaming jewels. A maid carrying a tray and bowl in one hand while holding a ladle in the other can be seen above the heavenly being. An official holding a pen and ink stone as well as a general holding a crescent-shaped axe are to the right of the Heavenly King. |
