Dazu Rock Carvings Beishan Cave 136: Avalokitesvara Holding a Seal

CHINA, Chongqing, Dazu; Southern Song dynasty (1127-1279), dated 1142-1146; Stone; H: 1.4 m
This niche is located on the south wall. Avalokitesvara has a round face and partially closed eyes. The Bodhisattva sits in full lotus position on a rectangular throne. One hand holds a jade seal, while the other holds ribbons and rests on the lap. The Bodhisattva’s tall headdress is covered with delicate vine-like decorations. The figure wears an intricate chest ornament, long stoles, and a loose robe tied at the waist. A nimbus is depicted behind the Bodhisattva’s head while a large, round mandorla surrounds the entire figure.
Two figures holding objects flank Avalokitesvara. Sudhana, to the right, wears a short headdress and clothing styled like a Confucian scholar. The Naga Girl is found to the left; her hair is in a high topknot and she is dressed in a long robe.
