Maijishan Grotto 127: Illustration of the Vimalakirti Sutra
CHINA, Gansu, Tianshui; Western Wei dynasty (535–556)
This mural is located on the lintel of the right niche and is divided into upper and lower sections. The upper section depicts the “Chapter on Manjusri’s Visit” from the Vimalakirti Sutra, where on the left Vimalakirti sits under a leaf-patterned canopy, with Manjusri Bodhisattva, who holds a scepter, sitting beneath a round canopy opposite him. A female heavenly being scatters flowers between the two figures, as described in the “Chapter on Observing Living Beings.”
Depicted beneath Manjusri Bodhisattva is the visit of the king, princes, and officials, as stated in the “Chapter on Skillful Means.” The king wears a tasseled crown and Chinese clothing with a loose gown that has a wide girdle. Officials and attendants, who hold parasols and fans, accompany the king. In front of Vimalakirti stands a disciple. The scene below is unidentifiable due to damage. |
