Mogao Cave 244: Mahakasyapa
CHINA, Gansu, Dunhuang; Sui to Tang dynasty (581–907)
This figure is painted on the lower left side of the back (west) wall. Mahakasyapa is portrayed as an elderly monk with knitted eyebrows and sunken cheeks. His nimbus and robe are colored red, blue, and brown. His face, chest, and hands are painted with simple, fine strokes of light brown. The right hand is raised before the chest, while the left holds a bowl. |
