Amitabha Buddha

JAPAN; Kamakura period (1185–1333), 13th century; Wood with lacquer and gilding; H: 91.5 cm; National Gallery of Australia, Canberra
This wooden statue of Amitabha was carved in the 13th century and gilded. The figure has the traditional signs of a Buddha, including the elongated ear lobes, and the three lines on the neck. The figure is standing barefoot on a double lotus pedestal with hands in the lowest grade of the highest class mudra for those arriving in the Western Pure Land. The folds of the monastic robes ripple downwards across the stomach and arms and then fall vertically over the thighs.
